Gulf of BothniaThe northern coasts of Scandinavia are famous for their bird locations, both on the Atlantic coast and in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia. In the Gulf of Bothnia you find birdstations on many islands, and there are many sanctuaries for birds. In the middle part of the bay of the Gulf of Bothnia you find the archipelago of Lulea. A place where birds from East Europe, the Barents region, the coasts of the Gulf of Bothnia and from the forests of northern Sweden gathers. The archipelago is the largest brackish water archipelago in the world, and the landscape shows a variety of topographies with stony islands, cliffs, untouched forests and sandy beaches. Some of the species found there are caspian tern, turnstone, temminck's stint, red-necked grebe, black grouse, capercaillie, ptarmigan, red-necked phalarope, black guillemot, razorbill, velvet scoter, white-tailed eagle and red-throated diver.

Bird Ringing Centre - Swedish Museum of Natural Historyhttp://www2.nrm.se/In Sweden all scientific bird ringing is administrated by the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Since the start of bird ringing in Sweden in 1911 more than eight million individual wild birds have been ringed and more than 120 000 of them have been recovered. The Bird Ringing Centre publishes, on an annual basis, a report with maps and comments on interesting recoveries, ringing statistics and a comprehensive list of recoveries in full detail...

Travelling Birder 2000 [January] - Remco Hofland - South Sweden & Denmarkhttp://www.camacdonald.com/birding/tripreports/Sweden00.htmlThrough the Internet and e-mail, local birders informed us about a Hawk Owl, also a most-wanted, at Dagsås, near Varberg, Sweden... 2001 [April] - Simon Woolley & Julia Casson - Uppland and Västmanlandhttp://geography.wincoll.ac.uk/jjcskw/trip%20reports/sweden/sweden.htmThe big lifer targets for Simon were Pygmy Owl, Grey-headed Woodpecker and Parrot Crossbill, while, in addition, Julia still needed Capercaillie, Black Woodpecker, Three-toed Woodpecker and Nutcracker. All these species are feasible in the Uppland/Västmanland region. In addition, we kept a weather eye out for White-backed Woodpecker, although this species is now sadly virtually extinct in Sweden. Just a bare handful of individuals is left, and it seems likely that the population will dwindle to zero in the very near future. More of this issue below, but suffice it to say at this point that we held out no real hope of seeing the species, despite visiting some possible sites. 2001 [July] - Lutz Lückerhttp://www.birdtours.co.uk/tripreports/norway/lapland2/laplandjuly2001.htmGenerally, it was a windy month of July. No long periods of sunshine, but not too much rain either. But the wind often kept birds and animals hidden and difficult to observe... 2002 [June] - Stephen Burchhttp://www.stephenburch.com/trips/sweden/sweden.htmA business trip to Bergen gave me this chance for a short taster to the magic of birding in the extreme north of Europe - something I had always hoped for, having a well read copy of the inspirational "Wild Wings to the Northlands" by Stan Bayliss Smith. Wintering birds like Steller`s Eider are still present, summer birds like Red-flanked Bluetail and Rustic Bunting have arrived (early June); and residents like Gyr Falcon and owls have nestlings while others are defending their territories... 2003 [September] Paul Beresford, Richard T Taylor & Andy Warren - Falsterbohttp://www.surfbirds.com/mb/trips/falsterbo-pk-1103.htmlFalsterbo is home to the famous bird observatory, Falsterbo Fågelstation, on the southwestern point of Sweden. This is where the two coastlines of Sweden come together, forming a funnel that concentrates migrants looking for a continuation of their overland route southwards. The short crossing over the Baltic Sea to Denmark makes this location the best-known Swedish birding hotspot for visual migration especially raptors. It really is a classic birding destination.... 2004 [July] - Lutz Lückerhttp://www.birdtours.co.uk/tripreports/scandinavia/scand5/scan-july-04.htmS Sweden to the Barents Sea... 2006 [May] - Geoff Dickerhttp://www.birdtours.co.uk/tripreports/sweden/sweden-6/sweden-may-06.htmIf asked where in Scandinavia could you see: Great Grey, Ural, Hawk, Tengmalm’s & Pygmy Owls; Three-Toed, Grey-Headed and Black Woodpeckers; Wryneck, White-Tailed Eagle; Honey Buzzard; Pallid Harrier; Capercaillie; Black, Willow & Hazel Grouse; Caspian Tern; Great Snipe; Siberian Jay; Icterine Warbler, and Thrush Nightingale in one trip, Sweden may not be the first country to spring to mind. However, during this trip I managed to see all of these species in addition to Collared Flycatcher... 2008 [June] - Stephen Burch - Lake Annsjon region - central Swedenhttp://www.stephenburch.com/trips/sweden08/sweden08.htmAnother business trip, this time to Stavanger in early June presented me with a further opportunity to experience a brief taste of the magic of birding in northern Europe. This time I decided to revisit the site of my first proper such trip, way back in my pre-camara days of 2002. The advantages of the Lake Annsjon area in central Sweden include straightforward access from Trondheim airport (east along the E14), magnificent scenery, and some relatively compact sites which allow northern species to be found without endless trekking through the sparsely populated (by birds and people) northern forests... 2009 [May] - Nick Mason - Lake Annsjon (Ånnsjön) region - central Swedenhttp://www.stephenburch.com/trips/sweden09/sweden09.htm... In addition to a pair of Cranes and two Whooper Swans, waders provided the main interest with my first ever summer plumage Ruff - a bizzare sight they were too! Also Wood Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Redshank and Greenshank. But no sign of Broad-billed Sandpiper or Red-necked Phalarope, both of which are reputed to occur here...

Artist - Atelje Björkmanhttp://www.gebbe.comBorn in Linköping, Sweden, in 1945 and since 1978 a fulltime artist. Lives in the village of Ödeshög (still Sweden) close to the big, cold and deep freshwaterlake Vättern, birdlake Tåkern and below the shadow of Mountain Omberg. Right in the middle of southern Sweden, where the nature and culture is so very rich. A special place on earth indeed, with a blessed light - just perfect for an artist with nature and landscape in mind! Gebbe is well known for his paintings in water colour, oil and tempera, based on sketches directly from reality in the nature - refined in the studio to pictures containing both an inner as well as an outside density, where light- and colour-treatment composition plays great and important roles.
